Determination the configuration of the root canal anatomy in Nigerians
Each tooth has a root canal system that comprises a pulp chamber and the root canal/s, the
number and configuration of the root canal is unique and may vary even in teeth of the same series. The most commonly used classification to describe the configuration is that by Vertussi and the procedure of root canal treatment requires that all these canals be treated. In literature, the lower central anterior for instance is said to present with a second canal in over 50% of cases. This second canal is usually found below the lingual shelf. Another case in point is the variance between the number of canals reported in literature for the upper second premolar and the number of canals observed in the clinics. This study aims to describe the configuration of the root canal system by determining (1) the number of canals in each tooth, (2) their configuration, (3) describe the cross-sectional details of the root canal apex and (4) Compare the number of canals seen after access cavity has been prepared to that seen following de-calcification.
In this study, extracted teeth which will be de-calcified will be used, the de-calcification will
allow for direct visual inspection of the whole root canal system. This direct visual inspection will allow for direct counting of the number of canals as well as an accurate view/picture of the configuration. The cross-sectional details of the root canal will be obtained by sectioning the root at 0.5mm from the apex. The expected result may show a variance from what has been reported in literature. The results from this study may change the protocol of location of canals as well as the obturation technique.
