Academic Background, Trainings, Skills, Positions, Teaching, Achievements (in Summary).

I graduated as a dental surgeon in 1997 from the Obafemi Awolowo University ile-ife andI had my housemanship in Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex ile ife. After a stint with the Ondo state hospital management board as a dental officer, I started residency training in periodontology in Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex ile ife, and completed with a fellowship of the West African college of surgeons (FWACS) in 2012. I worked as a Consultant periodontologist at the Military Hospital Lagos where I became the head of training and development till 2017. I was appointed a visiting Senior Lecturer and Consultant periodontologist at Bayero Universuty Kano till 2019. I served for a year as a Lecturer at the University of Lagos before my appointment at the Lagos state University College of Medicine in 2018. My special interest in surgical periodontology and dental Implantology as against the usual practices has attracted several young colleagues into the specialty and at present I have a Senior Registrar from Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Kano here in LASUTH to understudy and get trained in the different skills. Surgical Periodontology Efforts geared at self-development and training has endeared me to attend conferences and hands-on training workshops both locally and internationally in osseous surgeries, alveolar bone grafting and guided tissue regeneration. This procedures are aimed at therapeutic, curative and restoration of lost periodontal tissues which result from oral infections eventually causing tooth mobility and loss. Since 2018 more than 100 patients whose teeth should have been lost has been treated, saving the patients from the aesthetic, functional and psychosocial downsides associated with the resultant defects. The resident doctors have also been exposed to these cutting-edge procedures which involve the use of a range of materials from the alloplasts, xenografts and lately the use of autografts in which some of them are already very proficient. Flap procedures and soft tissue bioengineering is another area we have ventured into lately to build a complete smile makeover for the patients. These have been carried out with sub-epithelial connective tissue (SECT) grafts, free gingival grafts (FGF) and acellular dermal matrix allografts (ADMA) to restore soft tissue gingival defects which had hitherto been a no-go area in Nigeria. Support in form of provision of materials and human resource development and training will further our successes in these ventures. Dental Implantology My membership of the British Society of Periodontology and Implantology and the several trainings in dental implantology has exposed me to the several systems such as BICON, DIO, STRAUMMAN NEODENT, BIOIMPLANTS etc. Implantology is the globally acclaimed gold standard in restoration of lost teeth and retention of overdentures and obturators, hence it’s potential to general a huge revenue for the hospital. LASUTH Dental centre can quickly become a referral centre for implantology because of the patient volume and the demand. Provision of implant motor drill and implant kit can set the ball rolling in this regard. The role of an honorary consultant in LASUTH will provide for a good platform to do a lot more in patients’ management, teachings and training of students and residents. My foray into research and moderate proficiency in biostatistics will also be a plus.
