About Physiology(Activities & Objectives)

Departmental Activities

Other activities undertaken by the department are as follows:

  1. i Seminars
  2. Meetings
  3. Research groups:

(i)  Endocrine Physiology Research Group

(ii)  Molecular Reproductive Physiology and Infertility Research Group

(iii) Cardiovascular/Renal Physiology Research Group

(iv) Smooth Muscle Research Group

(v) Neurophysiology Physiology Research Group

(vi) Reproduction/Development Programming Research Group

Faculty members take part in collaborative research within the College and with colleagues in other institutions within and outside the country.

Departmental Objective

  1. To provide qualitative physiological knowledge of human body systems to pre-clinical students;
  2. To stimulate interest of students in Physiology enough to engender post-graduate studies and thereby a career in Physiology;
  3. To train students of Bachelor of Science and post-graduate degrees in Human Physiology;
  4. To carry out relevant researches in the biological sciences in collaboration with other researchers in LASUCOM and other institutions.

(vi) Reproduction/Development Programming Research Group

Faculty members take part in collaborative research within the College and with colleagues in other institutions within and outside the country.

At the end of the Programme the graduates must demonstrate the following:

1)       knowledge of the normal structure, function, development and growth of the human body, and mind;

2)       ability to collate and evaluate data of physiological and related investigations;

3)       ability to critically evaluate literature about changes in physiological functions;

In order to attain these objectives, B.Sc Physiology students take courses in the

following subjects:

  1. i) Anatomy
  2. ii) Biochemistry

iii)      Physiology

  1. iv) General Pharmacology
  2. v) Bio-statistics, Psychology, Molecular Biology, Introduction to Bio-informatics and Immunology.

Mode of Instruction

Instruction to B.Sc Physiology students is given in the form of lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical sessions in the laboratory.

Seminars/Tutorials are given to smaller groups of students by lecturers while practical sessions take place in the laboratory with lecturers and technologists demonstrating and assisting the students

(v) Neurophysiology Physiology Research Group

(vi) Reproduction/Development Programming Research Group

Faculty members take part in collaborative research within the College and with colleagues in other institutions within and outside the country.

Assessment of Students

  1. For the award of B.Sc degree in Physiology, a student must pass all compulsory courses specified in the curriculum and must obtain a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 1.0;
  2. A student whose semester GPA and cumulative GPA is less than 1.00 for two consecutive semesters will be placed on probation;
  3. A student on probation whose Cumulative GPA falls below 1.00 for another semester shall be asked to withdraw from the programme.
  4.

EVALUATION

  1. Continuous Assessment will be held for each course within the programme at the middle or end of semester. Continuous assessment makes up of 30% of the total 100% examination marks.
  2. Each course will be examined at the end of the semester in which it is offered. End of course Examination will carry a total of 70% of the 100% total examination marks.
  3. There are no provisions for resit examinations in the B.Sc Physiology programme. Any student who fails a course will retake it in the next semester it is offered, provided the maximum number of units of registered courses for that semester does not exceed 24 units.
  4. External examiners will be appointed to participate in the evaluation of final year students’ projects before they graduate from the B.Sc programme.

Grading of Courses and final Marks

Grading of Courses and final Marks

  1. The minimum pass mark for the B.Sc. Physiology programme is 45% and the maximum score is 100%. The continuous assessment carries a total of 30% while the End of course examination carries a score of 70%.
  2. The specified grade points for the marks scored is listed on the table below:
