The Department

The Department of Behavioural Medicine became a department in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences in January 2003. The objective of the department was to teach behavioural sciences and clinical psychiatry to medical students. The department plays active role in teaching, research, clinical duties and also assists students to acquire communication and interpersonal relationships skills. The department is also involved in the provision of mental healthcare services in the community and primary healthcare level. The department has a psychology unit and medical students at the 400 Level receive lectures in clinical psychology. The 500 Level medical students are posted to the department of behavioural medicine for a period of six weeks, during the duration of their posting, medical students are exposed to the objectives and contents of lectures of the department.

Teaching and Assessment of Student

The mode of assessment at the behavioural medicine department is through end of posting in-course examination. The medical students are required to complete Log Books of their didactic activities which are signed by their lecturers to reflect their attendance at lectures and other activities of the department. The examination is in form of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and clinical long case presentations. In order to pass the examination, the students are expected to score a minimum of 50% in all three areas of the examination.

Attendance Policy

At the end of clerkship at the Department of Behavioural Medicine, medical students’ that had 75% minimum attendance at psychiatric lectures, ward rounds, activities of the out-patients’ clinics and other activities of the department are considered and allowed to sit for the end-of-posting in-course examination.
